We started in 2017 with a 15 kg machine; today we roast 140 tonnes.
Közel Kahve began in 2017 in a small workshop next to an old bakery in Kartal, with the first 15 kg roaster of the couple Barış and Selin Tunçer. We took our name from the Anatolian way of brewing coffee on embers (köz); but our aim was to carry the tradition on with beans from all over the world.
Today we roast around 140 tonnes of green coffee a year in two machines of 15 and 30 kg. The roast curve of every batch is recorded; no batch goes to shelves or cafés without being tasted on the cupping table. Our quality control team includes three licensed coffee graders.
In nine cafés, six in Istanbul and one each in Ankara, İzmir and Bursa, we serve espresso-based drinks as well as filter coffee and cold brew. The beans in the cafés have rested 3–21 days after roasting so the espresso is served at its best.
We hold annual contracts with 38 farms. The purchase price and the premium paid to the farmer appear in the report we publish every year. Our average purchase price is 35% above the reference exchange price for the origin concerned.
The Kartal Roastery is open to visitors on weekdays from 09:00 to 18:00. To see the roasting machines just let us know in advance; every Saturday at 11:00 we hold a public cupping session.
Look up the batch number on the bag on our site and see the profile and farm details.
