Single origin or blend? Differences, uses and how to choose

The strengths of both categories and a guide to choosing by method.

On the coffee shelf you see two main categories: single origin and blend. Both can be excellent; the difference lies in what you are looking for. Below we summarise the strengths of both groups and how to choose.

What is single origin?

Coffee from one country, usually one region and sometimes a single farm. The aim is to show how place, altitude, variety and processing come through in the cup. The jasmine aroma of Ethiopia Yirgacheffe or the blackcurrant acidity of Kenya are examples. Single-origin coffees usually give their best in filter and pour-over.

What is a blend?

A mixture in which different origins and processes are combined for a balanced cup. The main strength of a blend is consistency: even when an origin's season ends, a similar flavour profile can be kept. Espresso blends are designed for body and sweetness that do not vanish when combined with milk.

When to choose which?

  • If you drink plain filter: single origin, especially light roasts.
  • For espresso or milk drinks: a blend, because you expect the same taste every day.
  • If you want to explore: a single-origin subscription, a surprise every month.
  • For offices and cafés: a blend, plus a seasonal single origin if needed.

Common misunderstandings

“Single origin is higher quality” is not a correct generalisation; quality depends on the care taken at the farm, harvest and roast. A well-designed blend can be more balanced than an ordinary single origin. Conversely, the claim that “blends hide bad beans” does not apply to us; every component in our blends has its own score and cupping note on the bag card.

Roast level is a separate matter

Whether origin or blend, roast level shapes the taste. A light roast brings forward acidity and floral notes, a medium roast balance, and a dark roast body and cacao notes. That is why the roast level and recommended use are separate lines on our product pages.

Our suggestion

Buying both a blend and a single origin for home is the easiest way to compare the two worlds. Our Classic subscription does exactly this: a single origin and a blend each month. Our coffee finder quiz also tells you which direction to start from.

If you find it hard to decide, our Tasting Set offers four different origins in 100 g bags; this is how you can find which direction you lean towards.

Whichever path you choose, look at the roast date, the farm information and the recommended brewing method on the bag; these three pieces of information are the most honest guide to quality.
